{"id":1083,"date":"2015-06-02T13:33:30","date_gmt":"2015-06-02T13:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/behavioural-therapy.com\/?p=1083"},"modified":"2015-06-02T13:33:30","modified_gmt":"2015-06-02T13:33:30","slug":"this-supplement-may-stop-sadness-becoming-depression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behavioural-therapy.com\/?p=1083","title":{"rendered":"This Supplement May Stop Sadness Becoming Depression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/behavioural-therapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/stop-sadness-becoming-depression.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1085\" src=\"https:\/\/behavioural-therapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/stop-sadness-becoming-depression-300x294.jpg\" alt=\"stop sadness becoming depression\" width=\"300\" height=\"294\" \/><\/a>Probiotics may stop sadness becoming depression by helping people let go of the past, a new study has discovered.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the Leiden Institute of Brain and Cognition found that probiotics stopped people ruminating so much.<\/p>\n<p>Rumination is when people focus on bad experiences and feelings from the past. Dr Laura Steenbergen, the study\u2019s first author, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cRumination is one of the most predictive vulnerability markers of depression. Persistent ruminative thoughts often precede and predict episodes of depression.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the study 40 people were given a sachet to take with water or milk every day for four weeks. Half of the people received sachets that contained\u00a0a\u00a0multispecies\u00a0probiotic. The other half received a placebo for the four weeks. Before and afterwards people\u2019s so-called \u2018cognitive reactivity\u2019 was measured.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Cognitive reactivity\u2019 is the extent to which a sad mood can turn into something more serious.<\/p>\n<p>The authors explained the results:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c\u2026in the probiotics supplementation condition participants perceived themselves to be less distracted by aggressive and ruminative thoughts when in a sad mood.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, when people felt sad, those taking the probiotics ruminated less. The authors write:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c\u2026studies have shown\u00a0that the tendency to engage in ruminative thoughts is sufficient\u00a0to turn mood fluctuations into depressive episodes,\u00a0and that\u00a0individuals who typically respond to low mood by ruminating\u00a0about possible causes and consequences of their state have more\u00a0difficulties in recovering from depression.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Probiotics have been increasingly linked to good mental health. But this is the first study to identify this specific link. Dr\u00a0Lorenza Colzato, another of the study\u2019s authors, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cEven if preliminary, these results provide the first evidence that the intake of probiotics may help reduce negative thoughts associated with sad mood.<\/p>\n<p>As such, our findings shed an interesting new light on the potential of probiotics to serve as adjuvant or preventive therapy for depression.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The research is published in the journal <em>Brain, Behavior, and Immunity<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.bbi.2015.04.003\" target=\"_blank\">Steenbergen et al., 2015<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spring.org.uk\/\"
